Classical guitar gives new life to Baroque favs - go figure!

Posted by Lynn Paul on May 5, 2011 at 11:18pm 0 Comments

Love the BBC, reporting on the versatility of our favourite stringed instrument!

"Classical guitar virtuoso David Russell explains why his choice of instrument is helping to revive and spark new interest in the music of composers such as JS Bach and his contemporaries."

Hey there all you Guitar Insight folks...I've been talking to Steve Manning, and he suggested I post some info which may be of interest...

First, as the inventor of the Buzz Feiten Tuning System, Steve requested that I say a few words about it.

It's a non-invasive way to make your electric sound like a piano. It's very pleasant sounding, and can correct a lot of those annoying discrepencies that drive us crazy. To find a retrofitter near you, go to…

One of it's principle's is "Fretboard Visualization"- the awareness of the notes on the fretboard and how they form chords and scales.… Continue

The only thing I regret selling was my fender 'roscoe beck' 5 string bass.   let's be sensible - the only reason that something gets sold is that it isn't doing it for you. (anyone want to buy a jazzmaster?!)  haha

He is plucking the open-tuned lower course, and tapping the upper course like a Chapman Stick (his main instrument). Ya, looks freaky eh??

PrakDis!

Hi Guys and welcome to a new feature of Guitar Insight, PrakDis- at least that's how my 2 year old son says it so good enough for me!

A healthy, regular practice routine is paramount to your growth & improvement as a guitarist. In this column myself and hopefully other pro members will discuss and suggest regiments/approaches that you will find useful.

I'm not going to tab anything or include any notation yet but merely start with a suggestion:

Organize Your Practice Session

What I mean by this is allot time periods for working on specific aspects of your playing. Here's a breakdown of a 2hour practice session:
20 minutes: Warm Ups such as hand/finger/forearm stretches then chromatic scales.
20 minutes: Major Scales- Do a few keys each day-review and add more when the initial keys are thoroughly learned.
20 minutes: Chords/Inversions- smooth out rough chord changes and analyze progressions that are challenging you

Take a 5minute break-Have a tea or coffee-come back revived

30 minutes: Lift and transcribe a favourite solo or progression
30 minutes: Work on some of your originals (You can switch the order of those two if it helps)

There you have it- the 2hours should fly by and you will see gains in your playing almost immediately. Remember these are guidelines only, a novice or hobbyist can do less-say 20 minutes a day, and an aspiring pro or student preparing for college/University would accomplish more with a 4-6hour practice routine.

Comments? Questions?
Onwards guitar soldiers!

The Guitar Insight Book

Guitar Insight Members,

What does following a healthy diet, spirituality/meditation, eliminating credit card debt, and following principles of Feng Shui have to do with playing better guitar?

It's all explained in Guitar Insight:Life Lessons

As opposed to the earlier edition which is just a method/concept book this version is a dialect between a guru-like teacher and his student . Through their exploration of guitar knowledge, and the teacher's use of metaphor and analogy ,Robin brings up many cool tips and insights into many peripheral subjects, such as balancing devotion to practicing with the necessary routines of life, how to keep an orderly, organized practice space, and how to stay focused.
