Essay : Takers Economy : An Inquiry into Illegal File Sharing

Posted by Christopher Stewart on September 1, 2012 at 1:56pm 1 Comment

I've been nearly completely inactive in my social networks since mid-July or so. Not that I wouldn't have liked to participate, but I have been engrossed in the redaction of the above essay.

When I tackled the project, I thought it would take a few weeks at most, and that I would be able…

Guitar Zero

Posted by Steve Manning on February 22, 2012 at 10:42pm 1 Comment

Interesting new book on adults learning guitar:An NYU professor of psychology describes how he was able to learn to play the guitar in midlife in spite of a limited musical aptitude, revealing what he learned about the brain's capacity for musical proficiency at any time of life and how his findings challenge commonly accepted beliefs about musical talent and training.

Us & Them

Exhibit A-Standard, average guitar lesson: Your guitar teacher sure can play! He plays lots of cool stuff in the lesson, though he's not quite sure how to show you how to duplicate it as he just does it! Just do what he does. Can't be that hard.

Or you have the teacher who grabs one of the many popular guitar method books and has you play through it paying little or no attention to your tuning, fingering, posture or mental attitude that could be inhibiting your progress and…

Form your own Group!

Welcome to Groups on GI or to put it in terms more familiar to us, the Combos section. GI is a unifying entity, built on the knowledge and input of its membership. We love that collective spirit, but we also want to tap into the specialized expertise every member possesses and allow them to collaborate with other (like-minded) members on more specific topics.

Are you a classical player who wants to discuss specific techniques or do you come to GI specifically…

Practice Makes...

Hi Guys and welcome to a new feature of Guitar Insight, Pracice Makes...(striving for perfect!)

A healthy, regular practice routine is paramount to your growth & improvement as a guitarist. In this column myself and hopefully other pro members will discuss and suggest regiments/approaches that you will find useful.

I'm not going to tab anything or include any notation yet but merely start with a suggestion:

Organize Your Practice Session

What I mean by this is allot time periods for working on specific aspects of your playing. Here's a breakdown of a 2hour practice session:
20 minutes: Warm Ups such as hand/finger/forearm stretches then chromatic scales.
20 minutes: Major Scales- Do a few keys each day-review and add more when the initial keys are thoroughly learned.
20 minutes: Chords/Inversions- smooth out rough chord changes and analyze progressions that are challenging you

Take a 5minute break-Have a tea or coffee-come back revived

30 minutes: Lift and transcribe a favourite solo or progression
30 minutes: Work on some of your originals (You can switch the order of those two if it helps)

There you have it- the 2hours should fly by and you will see gains in your playing almost immediately. Remember these are guidelines only, a novice or hobbyist can do less-say 20 minutes a day, and an aspiring pro or student preparing for college/University would accomplish more with a 4-6hour practice routine.

Comments? Questions?
Onwards guitar soldiers!

The Guitar Insight Book

Guitar Insight Members,

What does following a healthy diet, spirituality/meditation, eliminating credit card debt, and following principles of Feng Shui have to do with playing better guitar?

It's all explained in Guitar Insight:Life Lessons

As opposed to the earlier edition which is just a method/concept book this version is a dialect between a guru-like teacher and his student . Through their exploration of guitar knowledge, and the teacher's use of metaphor and analogy ,Robin brings up many cool tips and insights into many peripheral subjects, such as balancing devotion to practicing with the necessary routines of life, how to keep an orderly, organized practice space, and how to stay focused.
